I’ve owned this deck since it first came out. I find it the most beautiful and intriguing deck. Far from seeing it as gloomy, I find it quite well balanced. I spend far more time reading the imagry based on my own interpretation, than just the suggestions of the author/painter. This is one corner of reality, where you get out of it what you put into it. If you’re looking for a deck to tell your fortune so you can figure out which pants to wear with which skirt, then I suggest looking elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a deck to search your own soul with, you could hardle do worse than by this deck(did I say that right? I get lost in the double negative world).

    So, yeah, I like it.

Everyone likes something different, obviously. I found that I loved some of the artwork, other cards I just did not get. Most of the readings I got from the deck were sort of gloomy. Very European, “Work harder, expect less.” Maybe that is just where I was in my life at the time, but I had the old Rider-Waite-Smith stand by deck and got different readings.
There are many circus performers depicted in the deck, especially the court cards. They all seem to be sleep walking or entranced. There was very little joy in the deck. The characters were all a bit glum.

I bought this for my mom few years ago. This is the only tarot deck she would use for reading for years. By the way, she’s a Tarot card reader and has many satisfied returning customers
