House of Tarot Cards

House of Tarot Cards

It began as a plan to shakedown the local psychic community every month. The anonymous letters were the first step. If that didn’t work, the phone calls started. It’s in your best interest to pay…or else, the muffled-voiced caller said. Those who didn’t comply soon found their shop windows broken, and their car tires slashed. Eventually, everyone gave in except Mrs. Sylvia. She was determined not to pay protection money to a low-life who thought psychics were an easy mark for fast cash. Her stubbornness resulted in first-degree murder: hers.

    AND THE MAGIC CONTINUES…, January 15, 2011

What a delight to find John’s and Stella’s on the first page! YES! The magic continues and this time on the languid shores of Virginia Beach or so it seems. Unexpectedly, albeit not unwillingly, John and Stella find themselves drawn into a crime scene long filed as unsolved but is it? The adventure continues as Alfred M. Albers takes us on a boardwalk journey, weaving a tale of suspense and magic. The unfortunate Mrs. Sylvia, finds herself the victim of “maifa tactics” in her seemingly innocent HOUSE OF TAROT CARDS, which is also the name of Mr.Albers’ second book. A fascinating follow up to his first book,OF GHOSTS AND MAGIC, where you first meet the characters John MIchaels and Stella. Family secrets, black-mail and of course the murder victims, highlight a trail of mislinked events from New York to Virginia, that seemingly can be solved only by a magical touch.
This book does not by any means fall into the “more of the same” category as often second books do. It gets the reader back on stage with the performers in the search to solve the crime, this time once and for all! I’m glad I got a copy of it before I returned home to Switzerland and am passing both books around to my english reading friends here!

Another intriguing mystery from Al Albers! Murder mysteries are not my favorite genre, but halfway through this book, I was hooked. Al’s style of mixing magician skills with solving mysteries kept me reading. Near the end, I could not put it down. Anxiously awaiting Al’s next mystery!

A great pre-vacation read this one (now what can I read on upcoming vacation?). Once again Al demonstrates a well thought out story. As with his first work, Al has again given us a (this time a who-done-it) mystery that captures one’s interest from the beginning and keeps you interested throughout to the end. Other authors should sit up and take note that complex stories and inappropriate language are not needed to keep one’s interest. Although only his second book, Mr. Albers has a good thing going and will undoubtedly continue to write successfully. An excellent story by and excellent author who is quickly bringing us back to using our imaginations and bringing the enjoyment of reading back. I look forward to his next book(s). Let’s hope there are many more. Keep up the good (strike that) – excellent work!!!
